The Underrated Greatness Of Sir Sid5/3/2018 NBA coaches and analysts nowadays rave about two-way players or those who can contribute on both the offensive and defensive ends of the court. A Milwaukee Bucks legend in the 1980s had one such player, but he continues to remain in relative obscurity, probably because he played in the shadows of Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, and Magic Johnson. His name is Sidney Moncrief, who is affectionately called by his fans Sir Sid or Sid the Squid. Moncrief was highly touted coming off college; he played for the University of Arkansas from 1975 to 1979. He helped resurrect a basketball program that had been mired in mediocrity for much of the previous years. And in the 1979 NBA Rookie Draft, the Milwaukee Bucks took a chance on the six-foot-three guard with the fifth overall pick. Image source: si.com His versatility on the court received widespread praise across the league. The combination of his impressive offensive skills and defensive tenacity made him a nightmare for opposing teams. Even Jordan told of him, “When you play against Moncrief, you’re in for a night of all-around basketball. He’ll hound you everywhere you go, both ends of the court. You just expect it.” As a matter of fact, it was Sir Sid and the Bucks who gave Jordan his first playoff defeat in 1985, when the best player of all time was still a rookie. Moncrief’s accolades include winning the first-ever NBA Defensive Player of the Year award in the 1982-83 season, a feat he would repeat the next season, five All-NBA Team selections, and five straight All-Star team selections. Furthermore, he led the Bucks to the third-best winning percentage during the 1980s decade, with only the Los Angeles Lakers and Boston Celtics ahead of the team. In Badgers basketball, very few names are as revered as Frank Kaminsky’s. A number of sportswriters, fans, and basketball experts have even gone so far as to say that Kaminsky was the greatest Badger of all time. Kaminsky was a Big Ten Preseason Player of the Year awardee before the 2014 season started. Because of him, many sports writers and fans had placed their bets on the Badgers to win it all. It was a bold claim, but Kaminsky and company were up to the task. Image source: BTpowerhouse.com With Kaminsky on the court leading them, the Badgers won 36 of 39 games. After winning the regular season title, they went on to win the tournament of the Big Ten. This was the first time in Badgers history that they were the NCAA’s number one seed. They achieved more glory by besting Kentucky on the way to their first finals appearance. Although they eventually fell to Duke in the championship game, people knew that the Badgers could not have done it without their leader, Kaminsky. Image source: Wisconsin.rivals.com Kaminsky would win several awards that year – first-team All-American, Associated Press College Basketball Player of the Year, and National Association of Basketball Coaches Player of the Year among others. He is the most decorated player in Badgers basketball, even bagging the school’s Male Athlete of the Year.
With all these accomplishments, it’s not hard to see why people could call him the Badgers’ GOAT. Hi, I’m Sandy Petrocelli from Wisconsin. I love sports and I love writing about it. Follow me on Twitter for similar updates.

Any self-respecting Packers fan can argue for several hours on the greatest player who has ever donned the Packers jersey. It’s a tough call. With 13 NFL titles and four Super Bowl crowns, not to mention countless of astonishing seasons, the team is filled with some of the greatest talents the game has ever seen. Image source: https://dairylandexpress.com Wide Receiver Don Hutson is a legend among Packers fans. Winning back-to-back MVP awards in 1941 and 1942, Hutson held a total of 18 NFL records by the time he retired. He had a total of 99 touchdown receptions, a record only broken by Steve Largent in 1989. Quarterback Brett Favre is also a Packer favorite. His 160 wins with the Packers broke the all-time high of John Elway which was 148. Favre threw a total of 61,655 yards in his great career, topping Dan Marino’s 61,361. He also broke Marino’s record of touchdown passes 442 to Marino’s 420. Image source: www.pinterest.com However, the title of greatest Packer of all time has to be quarterback Bart Starr. Between 1961 and 1967, Starr led the Packers to five NFL titles. He also helped the team win Super Bowl I and II. Starr is praised for his passing and quick decision making. One of his career highlights was his sneak dive into the end zone to claim the championships over the Dallas Cowboys in 1967. This was done in -15 degrees Fahrenheit temperatures.

Wisconsin football has always been close to my heart. The Badgers football program has produced a number of amazing football players in its history. Today, let’s look at some of the greatest leaders with this list of the Badgers’ best quarterbacks. Darrell Bevell: Fans believe Darrell Bevell is the best QB in Badgers’ history because stats don’t lie. He leads the team in all-time passing yards, passing touchdowns, and completions. In 1993, he led the team to a 10-1-1 record – good enough to make them co-champions with the Big Ten. Image source : 247sports.com Scott Tolzien: 2009 was a stellar year for Scott Tolzien. He started in all games and helped the team to a 9-3 record. He also won a Champs Sports Bowl and holds the Badgers’ record of 211 completions. Brooks Bollinger: The ‘90s ended on a high note for the Badgers with the emergence of Brooks Bollinger. He was at the center of the most successful Badger era, winning the Rose Bowl in 2000. He also never lost in three bowl games. Image source : 247sports.com Russell Wilson: The problem with Russell Wilson was that he only played a single season with the Badgers. But what a season it was. The team ended with an 11-3 record, a Big Ten Championship, and a Rose Bowl appearance. Had he stayed longer, he would’ve been a consensus pick for GOAT Badger. By now the Utah Jazz’ Donovan Mitchell is no stranger to NBA fans and aficionados. The explosive, 21-year-old guard not only won the recent NBA dunk contest with a nod to Vince Carter; he is also leading the Jazz in their current playoff chase. Oh, and he’s just a rookie. Mitchell was not on the radar when the season began, overshadowed by the arrival of Lonzo Ball and the recent dominance of other fellow rookies like Jayson Tatum, Kyle Kuzma, and Ben Simmons. But the former Cardinal star has more than shown that he belongs in the league and should even be a solid Rookie of the Year contender. Image source: clutchpoints.com As of this writing, Mitchell has just led the Jazz past the Kings, scoring 27 points and five assists. He is currently averaging nearly 20 points per game, 3.5 assists, and 3.5 rebounds. These numbers are enough to get him in contention for the coveted rookie award. Also, to say that it’s very rare that a rookie leads the charge of a storied franchise like the Utah Jazz is an understatement. Mitchell adds a great offensive option to the Jazz backcourt. Will Donovan Mitchell get the award, though? If his solid work continues the rest of the season, he should go neck-and-neck with Philly’s Ben Simmons. He has already overtaken his other NBA batchmates. It would be quite hard to dislodge Ben Simmons from the top position, but a Jazz push to the playoffs coupled with a Sixers breakdown might just do the trick.
