By now the Utah Jazz’ Donovan Mitchell is no stranger to NBA fans and aficionados. The explosive, 21-year-old guard not only won the recent NBA dunk contest with a nod to Vince Carter; he is also leading the Jazz in their current playoff chase. Oh, and he’s just a rookie. Mitchell was not on the radar when the season began, overshadowed by the arrival of Lonzo Ball and the recent dominance of other fellow rookies like Jayson Tatum, Kyle Kuzma, and Ben Simmons. But the former Cardinal star has more than shown that he belongs in the league and should even be a solid Rookie of the Year contender. Image source: clutchpoints.com As of this writing, Mitchell has just led the Jazz past the Kings, scoring 27 points and five assists. He is currently averaging nearly 20 points per game, 3.5 assists, and 3.5 rebounds. These numbers are enough to get him in contention for the coveted rookie award. Also, to say that it’s very rare that a rookie leads the charge of a storied franchise like the Utah Jazz is an understatement. Mitchell adds a great offensive option to the Jazz backcourt. Will Donovan Mitchell get the award, though? If his solid work continues the rest of the season, he should go neck-and-neck with Philly’s Ben Simmons. He has already overtaken his other NBA batchmates. It would be quite hard to dislodge Ben Simmons from the top position, but a Jazz push to the playoffs coupled with a Sixers breakdown might just do the trick.
